Buck-Boost Converter Design and Working Principles

A Buck-Boost Converter is a DC-DC converter that can either increase (boost) or decrease (buck) the input voltage to maintain a stable output. It operates using pulse-width modulation (PWM), which controls how long the transistor (or MOSFET) remains ON or OFF during each switching cycle. This ability makes it extremely useful in circuits where the supply voltage varies — such as battery-powered devices or solar systems.

Main Components

E (Input Source): Provides the supply voltage to the converter.

S (Switch): A transistor or MOSFET that controls the current flow.

L (Inductor): Stores energy in its magnetic field during the ON phase.

D (Diode): Directs current to the load during the OFF phase.

C (Capacitor): Filters and smooths the output voltage.

U (Output Voltage): Represents the regulated DC voltage delivered across the load resistor (R).

R (Load): Represents the connected circuit or device receiving power.

Working Operation

The converter works in two main phases during each switching cycle:

When the Switch (S) is ON

The MOSFET conducts and connects the inductor directly to the input voltage.

The inductor stores energy by building a magnetic field.

The diode (D) becomes reverse-biased and blocks current flow to the load.

The capacitor supplies power to the load during this time.

When the Switch (S) is OFF

The MOSFET turns off, breaking the connection to the input source.

The magnetic field in the inductor collapses, releasing stored energy.

The diode (D) becomes forward-biased and allows current to flow to the load.

The capacitor charges and smooths the voltage output.
