The PM SHRI Scheme (PM Schools for Rising India) aims to enhance the quality of existing schools and showcase the implementation of the National Education Policy, 2020, transforming them into exemplary institutions over time.
Eligibility for the PM SHRI Scheme includes only those elementary schools (Class 1-5/1-8) and secondary/senior secondary schools (Class 1-10/1-12/6-10/6-12) that are managed by the Central, State, or UT Governments, or local self-governments and have a UDISE+ code.
Schools need to apply through the online portal (https://pmshrischools.education.gov.in/). The portal will be open four times a year, once every quarter, for the first two years of the scheme.
Quality Education: Provide high-quality, equitable, and inclusive education in a joyful environment, catering to diverse backgrounds and academic abilities, in line with the National Education Policy 2020.
Leadership and Mentorship: PM SHRI Schools will lead and mentor other schools in their regions.
Green Schools: Develop environmentally friendly schools with solar panels, LED lights, natural farming nutrition gardens, waste management, water conservation, and sustainable lifestyle practices.
Innovative Pedagogy: Implement experiential, holistic, integrated, and learner-centered teaching methods, especially in the foundational years.
Focus on Learning Outcomes: Ensure learning outcomes for every child in every grade with competency-based assessments based on conceptual understanding and real-life application.
Resource Assessment: Regularly assess and improve the availability, adequacy, and utilization of resources.
Skill Development: Link with Sector Skill Councils and local industries to enhance employability and provide better job opportunities.
Quality Assessment: Develop a School Quality Assessment Framework (SQAF) with key performance indicators to regularly evaluate and ensure quality standards.
The PM SHRI School scheme is a centrally sponsored initiative by the Government of India under the Department of School Education and Literacy. The total project cost is Rs 27,360 crore, with the central government contributing Rs 18,128 crore over a five-year period from 2022-23 to 2026-27.
Schools will be selected through a competitive Challenge Mode to become exemplar institutions. The selection process involves three stages with specific timelines:
Stage 1: States/UTs will sign an MoU with the Centre, outlining their commitments to support the schools in achieving the quality standards of PM SHRI schools.
Stage 2: A pool of eligible schools will be identified based on a prescribed minimum benchmark using UDISE+ data.
Stage 3: Schools from the eligible pool will compete to meet certain criteria using the challenge method. The fulfilment of these conditions will be certified through physical inspections by States/UTs/KVS/NVS.
A maximum of two schools (one elementary and one secondary/senior secondary) will be selected per block/ULB, with an overall upper limit on the number of schools selected across India.
