Mini Project Guide: Low-Power E-Ink Clock

Choose Your Hardware
E-Ink display (SPI) + low-power microcontroller (ESP32, XIAO, etc.) + RTC module (DS3231) + Li-ion or coin cell power.

Wire the Circuit
Connect the E-Ink via SPI (as above) and connect the RTC via I²C (SDA/SCL). Power everything from a 3.3V-compatible source.

Write the Firmware
– Initialize the RTC and read current time.
– Draw time and date on a framebuffer (HH:MM, day/date).
– Send the buffer to the E-Ink display to refresh.

Optimize for Low Power
– Refresh only once per minute (or even once per 5 minutes).
– Put the microcontroller into deep-sleep between updates.
– Wake up via timer interrupt, update time, refresh display, sleep again.

Enclosure & Finishing
Mount the display in a small frame or 3D-printed case, expose only a single button for “manual refresh” or “backlight” if you add one.

You can use an Arduino Uno to write an image onto an E-Ink display module. E-Ink, also known as E-Paper, looks like real ink on paper and is perfect for Arduino projects due to its clear visibility, high contrast, wide viewing angle, and low power usage. Once you program the display, it keeps the image even without power.
