1. Can a stepper motor run on DC?
- Drives for stepper motors can have inputs that are either ac or dc. What happens inside the drive is that the input signal is converted to a series of square wave pulses that are applied to the motor's windings to power the motor and produce motion.
2. Are stepper motors stronger than DC motors?
- Some DC motors also generate high torques at low speeds, but are more suited for continuous uses, as their torque is constant over their speed range. The main difference is that, while stepper motors can push harder from rest, DC motors tend to have more sustained output.
3. What is a DC stepper motor?
- Stepper motors are DC motors that move in discrete steps. They have multiple coils that are organized in groups called "phases". By energizing each phase in sequence, the motor will rotate, one step at a time. With a computer-controlled stepping, you can achieve very precise positioning and/or speed control.
4. How is the stepper motor controlled?
- They use open-loop control and are operated by having a controller generate pulses that are input to a driver, which in turn supplies the drive current to the motor. Stepper motors are controlled by the input of electrical pulses, such that the speed of motor rotation is proportional to the input pulse rate.
5. How does 28BYJ-48 stepper motor work?
- The 28BYJ-48 stepper motor has four phases in total. The red wire is always pulled HIGH. The phase is energised when another lead is pulled LOW. The stepper motor only rotates when the phases are energised in a logical sequence known as a step sequence.
