8-Bit Serial In/Parallel Out Shift Register IC - 74HC164
The 74HC Series 74HC164 IC utilizes advanced silicon-gate CMOS technology. It has high noise immunity and low consumption of standard CMOS integrated circuits. It also offers speeds comparable to low-power Schottky devices. This 8-bit shift register has gated serial inputs and CLEAR.
Each register bit is a D-type master/slave flip-flop. Inputs A & B permit complete control over the incoming data. A LOW at either or both inputs inhibits the entry of new data and resets the first flip-flop to the low level at the next clock pulse. A high level of one input enables the other input which will then determine the state of the first flip-flop.
Data at the serial inputs may be changed while the clock is HIGH or LOW, but only information meeting the setup and hold time requirements will be entered. Data is serially shifted in and out of the 8-bit register during the positive-going transition of the clock pulse. Clear is independent of the clock and accomplished by a low level at the CLEAR input. The 74HC logic family is functionally as well as pin-out compatible with the standard 74LS logic family. All inputs are protected from damage due to static discharge by internal diode clamps to VCC and the ground.

ADDITIONAL RESOURCES
1.What is the function of the 74HC164 IC?
- The 74HC164 integrated circuit is a serial-in, parallel-out shift register with 8 bits. It is frequently used in digital circuits that require data storage and transfer.
2.How does the clear function of the 74HC164 IC work?
- The 74HC164 IC's clear function allows the shift register to be reset to its initial state at any time. When the clear input (labelled "CLR") is set to a low logic level, all shift register outputs are set to zero.
3.How is the 74HC164 different from the 74HC595 IC?
- The 74HC164 and 74HC595 are both shift registers, but they serve different purposes. The 74HC164 is a serial-in, parallel-out shift register with 8 outputs, whereas the 74HC595 is a serial-in, serial-out shift register with 8 outputs and a storage register. The 74HC595 can be used to drive LEDs or other output devices, and it has a cascading feature that allows multiple 74HC595 ICs to be connected in series to drive more outputs. The 74HC164, on the other hand, lacks a storage register and a cascading feature and is primarily used for data storage and transfer.
