MQ-5 Gas Sensor Module
The Simple MQ-5 Gas Sensor Module is an inexpensive way to add basic gas sensing to your project. A Buzzer is used by the MQ-5 Methane LPG Liquid Propane Gas Sensor Module particulate sensor to detect any detected material that is even present in the air!
This MQ-5 Methane LPG Liquid Propane Gas Sensor Module is widely used in gas leak detection pieces of equipment in the home and industry, and is suitable for detecting LPG, natural gas, town gas, as well as avoiding the noise of alcohol and cooking fumes and cigarette smoke.
The MQ5 (MQ-5) sensor is used in gas leakage detection equipment in consumer and industrial applications. It can detect LPG, natural gas, and coal gas. Avoid alcohol noise, cooking fumes, and cigarette smoke. The potentiometer can be used to adjust the sensitivity.
The MQ-5 gas sensor's sensitive material is tin Oxide (SnO2), which has a lower conductivity in clean air. When the target combustible gas is present, the sensor's conductivity increases as the gas concentration rises. Please use a simple electro circuit to convert the change in conductivity to the corresponding gas concentration output signal.
The MQ-5 gas sensor has a high sensitivity to methane, propane, and butane and can detect both methane and propane. The sensor could be used to detect various combustible gases, particularly methane; it is low-cost and suitable for a variety of applications.

1. What are gas sensors? How do they work?
- Gas sensors (also known as gas detectors) are electronic devices that detect and identify different types of gasses. They are commonly used to detect toxic or explosive gasses and measure gas concentration.
Gas sensor detects the presence or concentration of gases in the atmosphere. Based on the concentration of the gas the sensor produces a corresponding potential difference by changing the resistance of the material inside the sensor, which can be measured as output voltage. Based on this voltage value the type and concentration of the gas can be estimated.
2. How to use MQ-5 Gas Sensor?
- Power the module with 5V and you should notice the power LED on the module to glow and when no gas it detected the output LED will remain turned off meaning the digital output pin will be 0V. Remember that these sensors have to be kept on for pre-heating time before you can actually work with it. Now, introduce the sensor to the gas you want to detect and you should see the output LED to go high along with the digital pin, if not use the potentiometer until the output gets high. Now every time your sensor gets introduced to this gas at this particular concentration the digital pin will go high (5V) else will remain low (0V).
