Witty Fox - OPT3001 Digital Ambient Light Sensor
OPT3001 Digital Ambient Light Sensor is a single-chip lux meter that measures the intensity of light as visible by the human eye. Measurements can be made from 0.01 lux up to 83k lux without manually selecting full-scale ranges by using the built-in, full-scale setting feature. This capability allows light measurement over a 23-bit effective dynamic range. The OPT3001 is a sensor that measures the intensity of visible light. The spectral response of the sensor tightly matches the photopic response of the human eye and includes significant infrared rejection.
The precision spectral response and strong IR rejection of the device enable the OPT3001 Light Sensor to accurately meter the intensity of light as seen by the human eye regardless of the light source. The strong IR rejection also aids in maintaining high accuracy when the industrial design calls for mounting the sensor under dark glass for aesthetics. The OPT3001 is designed for systems that create light-based experiences for humans and is an ideal preferred replacement for photodiodes, photoresistors, or other ambient light sensors with less human eye matching and IR rejection.

1. What does an ambient light sensor measure?
- With an OPT view point ,the ambient light sensor is used to measure optical energy at a specific wavelength or specific bands of wavelengths on the light spectrum. The goal of these applications is to improve the visual experience and make the lighting comfortable for the end user. An ambient light sensor measures the ambient(nearby vicinity) illuminance levels(lux) where it is placed. It specifically calculates the illuminance level based on the light falling on it.
2. How do I turn on my ambient light sensor?
- You can turn on your ambient light sensor by powering it with a 3.3v supply. You can connect the 3.3v line to the vdd pin on the sensor and the ground line to the GND pin on the sensor.
3. How do I test my ambient light sensor?
- To do a basic test of your ambient light sensor you can display the lux values that it is reading in a bright vicinity, then cover the sensor with your hand and verify that the lux values are decreasing.
