1. What is a Flight Controller?

  • Flight controllers are the central electronic processing units with a number of fixed purpose ports for power, instruments, and power electronics respectively, they have a vast array of sensing instruments onboard like accelerometers (tilt, orientation & axial acceleration), gyroscopes (for rotation vectors and motion vectors), GPS or Global Positioning Systems (for geographic position coordinates), compass (for directional orientation) and so much more. The flight controller draws data from all of these instruments and couples it with input from the pilot to facilitate the desired flight using its complex algorithms and programmed settings.

2. What is APM in Flight Controllers?

  • Ardupilot Mega (APM) is a professional quality IMU autopilot that is based on the Arduino Mega platform. This autopilot flight controller can control fixed-wing aircraft, multi-rotor helicopters, as well as traditional helicopters. It is a full autopilot capable of autonomous stabilization, way-point-based navigation and two-way telemetry with Xbee wireless modules.

3. Does APM 2.8 have GPS?

  • No, the ArduPilot APM 2.8 Flight Control Board does not have GPS built-in. For drones and quadcopters, we recommend using an external GPS/compass module (with the jumper removed) that can be mounted away from sources of magnetic interference. The  ArduPilot APM Flight Control Board can be easily interfaced with the F18468-70 NEO-7M 7M GPS Module

4. How do I download the APM planner?

  •  Run the .exe file first. Open the .exe file and run the installation wizard. Then read the Open Source License Agreement and select I Agree. Then select Options. Select an installation option. Finally, close the wizard to complete the installation. Select Close to exit the wizard.
