BC557 PNP Transistor - (Pack of 5)

A transistor is a semiconductor device used to amplify and switch electronic signals and electrical power. It is composed of semiconductor material with at least three terminals for connection to an external circuit. A voltage or current applied to one pair of the transistor's terminals changes the current through another pair of terminals. Because the controlled (output) power can be higher than the controlling (input) power, a transistor can amplify a signal.

The BC557 (RM0385) is a PNP transistor and a heavy-duty drop-in replacement for a 2N2222 or 2N3906. The three terminals of a bipolar transistor are called the emitter, base, and collector. A small current into the base controls a large current flow from the collector to the emitter. The current at the base is typically one-hundredth of the collector-emitter current. Moreover, the large current flow is almost independent of the voltage across the transistor from collector to emitter.

1. What is a PNP-type transistor?

  • PNP transistors are transistors that have one n-type material doped with two p-type materials. It is a device that is powered by a current. The small amount of base current-controlled both the emitter and collector currents.

2. Can I use BC547 instead of 2N2222?

  • The 2N2222 and BC547 transistors are both general-purpose transistors that are frequently used in electrical circuits; the BC547 transistor is one of the best 2N2222 transistors equivalents.

3. How does a PNP transistor work?

  • In a PNP transistor, the base current which enters the collector is amplified. The base is typically in charge of controlling current flow. In the base, the current flows in the opposite direction. In a PNP transistor, the emitter emits “holes”, and these holes are collected by the collector.

4. What is the BC557 PNP transistor?

  • The BC557 (RM0385) is a PNP transistor and a heavy-duty drop-in replacement for a 2N2222 or 2N3906. The three terminals of a bipolar transistor are called the emitter, base, and collector.
