Solder pastes are classified into different grades based on the size of the solder balls. It is not possible to measure and classify the exact size of the balls. Therefore, solder paste is graded so that 80% of the balls fit within the size band. There are three most commonly used solder pastes, Type 3, Type 4, and Type 5. Type 3 solder powders are primarily in the 25-45 µm size range. Type 4 solder powders are primarily in the 20-38 µm size range. Type 5 solder powders are primarily in the 15-25 µm size range.
