MQ-3 Gas Sensor Module
This is the MQ-3 Gas Sensor Module, which is simple to use. It can sense the presence of Alcohol in the air. The module uses our MQ-3 sensor. It simplifies the interface to the odd pin spacing of the sensor and provides an interface through standard 4 x 0.1″ header pins. MQ-3 gas sensor provides an analog output corresponding to the concentration of the gas in the air and an easy-to-use digital output.
The sensitive material used for this sensor is SnO2, whose conductivity is lower in clean air. Its conductivity increases as the concentration of alcohol gasses increases. It has a high sensitivity to alcohol and has good resistance to disturbances due to smoke, vapour and gasoline. MQ-3 gas sensor module provides both digital and analog outputs. It can be easily interfaced with Microcontrollers like Arduino Boards , Raspberry Pi etc.
This MQ-3 alcohol sensor is suitable for detecting alcohol concentration on your breath, just like your common breathalyzer. It has a high sensitivity and fast response time. The sensor provides an analog resistive output based on alcohol concentration. The drive circuit is very simple, all it needs is one resistor. A simple interface could be a 0-3.3V ADC

ADDITIONAL RESOURCES
1. What are gas sensors? How do they work?
- Gas sensors (also known as gas detectors) are electronic devices that detect and identify different types of gasses. They are commonly used to detect toxic or explosive gasses and measure gas concentration.
Gas sensor detect the presence or concentration of gases in the atmosphere. Based on the concentration of the gas the sensor produces a corresponding potential difference by changing the resistance of the material inside the sensor, which can be measured as output voltage. Based on this voltage value the type and concentration of the gas can be estimated.
2.What is the use of MQ3 sensor?
- The MQ3 Gas Sensor module is useful for detecting gas leaks (in home and industry). It can detect Alcohol, Benzine, CH4, Hexane, LPG, and CO. Measurements can be taken as soon as possible due to their high sensitivity and quick response time. The potentiometer can be used to adjust the sensor's sensitivity.
3. Which sensor is used to detect alcohol?
- The alcohol sensor is technically known as an MQ3 sensor because it detects ethanol in the air. When a drunk person breathes near an alcohol sensor, the sensor detects the ethanol in his breath and provides an output based on the concentration of alcohol.
4. How to use the MQ3 Gas Sensor?
- The onboard potentiometer can be used to set the maximum gas concentration beyond which the digital output gets triggered.
Just power the module with 5V set the threshold and you can start getting the gas concentration of the air around the sensor! An onboard LED signals the presence of any gas.
Perfect sensing alcohol concentration on your breath just like a common Breathalyzer.
The digital output can be easily interfaced with microcontrollers and other circuits.
The analogue output can be hooked up to an ADC of a microcontroller to get a wide range of sensor readings.
5. What is gas sensing?
- Gas sensors use specific physical and chemical effects to convert the components and concentrations of various gasses into standard electrical signals. It is widely used in the detection of noxious and hazardous gasses, as well as natural gas leakage.
