Artificial intelligence is THE big talk of this era. What is it? How will it affect the lives of Humans? What would be the world like with the Efficiency Requirements being 99%? Will Muggles be able to survive, match the expectations and achieve their goals? Inventions like Autonomous Cars and Sophia, the humanoid robot, are proof enough that AI will bring one of the biggest and most important evolutions that the human race will have ever seen.
Artificial intelligence is the contrast to the natural intelligence that living organisms have and can also be termed as the study of intelligent agents. AI is based on the idea of mimicking human intelligence. The goals of AI include learning, perception, reasoning, planning, and problem-solving. The field of AI research was born at a workshop at Dartmouth College in 1956. Allen Newell, Herbert Simon, John McCarthy, Marvin Minsky and Arthur Samuel became the founders and leaders of AI research. AI basically perceives the environment and takes action that will maximise the output and the chance to achieve the assigned goals. This field is a set and involves a subset of various other fields like machine learning which has a subset of Deep Learning, Neural Network, and Big Data. AI uses tools that are based on the concepts of Statistics, Probability, and Economics.
Machine Learning, also known as ML, is a predominant and conspicuously popular part of AI. It is an application that gives the ability to automatically learn without human intervention and improve the experience. The term ‘Machine Learning’ was coined by Arthur Samuel in 1959 and is a field of computer science which uses statistical data and gives the ability to learn from the computers without being programmed for each task. Reiteration of the data takes place which results in improving and evolving of the machines. The requirement of large amounts of data in AI brings ‘Big Data’ into focus. Big Data is data sets, both structured and unstructured, which needs to be processed to obtain useful information from it. In today’s era, every work we do generates a digital trail which is used by agencies to obtain necessary information; starting from going online, GPS enabled smartphones, online shopping, communicating with friends/family over social media.
‘Big Data’ can be used for disaster management as it can help in Data Prediction which is beneficial for AI, even though Data Security and Privacy remain a major concern. Artificial neural networks and deep learning are closely related to the study of the information processed and communication pattern in a biological nervous system.
Aren’t you appalled at how Technology has advanced, and how AI is simplifying our life everyday? Inventions and Innovations benefit the human race and make life easier, and they are perfect, until they possess a danger to our existence. As Stephan Hawking mentioned - "Artificial Intelligence would take off on its own, and re-design itself at an ever-increasing rate. Humans, who are limited by slow biological evolution, wouldn't be able to compete and would be superseded.” Hence, if not handled with precaution, AI would become the source of termination of mankind.
