Atal Tinkering Labs Vision

Atal Tinkering Labs (ATLs) are a key initiative of the Atal Innovation Mission (AIM), which operates under the National Institution for Transforming India (NITI) Aayog. AIM is the Indian government's flagship program to foster a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship across the country.
The overarching vision is to nurture one million children in India as "Neoteric Innovators”.ATLs aims to foster curiosity, creativity, and imagination in young minds so that they can create solutions for real-world problems.
The goal is to inculcate essential 21st-century skills such as design thinking, computational thinking, adaptive learning, physical computing, problem-solving, and critical thinking by providing a platform for students to work with tools and equipment related to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM).

Government Grant for Setting Up Atal Tinkering Labs (ATLs)

The government offers financial assistance to schools for setting up and running Atal Labs through a structured Grant-in-Aid program. Each selected school receives a total grant of ₹20 lakh. Out of this, ₹10 lakh is provided as a one-time establishment cost in the first year. This amount is meant for purchasing essential equipment such as do-it-yourself (DIY) kits, 3D printers, electronic tools, and other necessary instruments required to set up the lab.
The remaining ₹10 lakh is allocated for operational and maintenance expenses, which are distributed at ₹2 lakh per year for a maximum of five years.
These funds are intended to cover costs such as equipment upkeep, buying consumables, organizing science-related events like lectures and innovation competitions, and paying honorariums to faculty members and mentors. At the beginning of the program, an initial amount of ₹12 lakh (₹10 lakh for setting up the lab and ₹2 lakh for the first year’s operational costs) is directly transferred to the selected schools.

Atal Tinkering Lab Setup and Design

Setting up an ATL Lab in School requires to meet certain infrastructure, organizational, and human resource criteria to ensure the lab functions effectively and supports student innovation.
Firstly, the school must allocate a dedicated space for the lab, ideally measuring at least 1,500 square feet. In special cases, such as in hilly or island regions, a minimum area of 1,000 square feet may be considered.
This space should be equipped with workstations or benches, an adequate power supply, and internet connectivity to support various tools and devices.It is also important to have proper storage facilities for tools, materials, and equipment to maintain a clean and organized environment.
Additionally, schools must appoint a qualified teacher or mentor to manage the lab's day-to-day operations and provide guidance to students. The ATL lab should be designed to promote flexible and collaborative learning. This may include additional features such as meeting areas and video conferencing facilities to enable teamwork and remote mentoring sessions.

Registration Process for Establishing an Atal Tinkering Lab (ATL)

Schools that wish to set up an Atal Tinkering Lab (ATL) must follow a structured registration and application process through the Atal Innovation Mission (AIM).
Registration: Interested schools are required to register on the official AIM portal at aim.gov.in. During registration, schools must provide relevant institutional details and supporting documentation as specified on the portal.
Application: After successful registration, schools must complete and submit the ATL application form through the same portal. The application must include a vision document outlining the school’s goals and plans for the ATL. Additionally, a declaration on the school’s official letterhead is required as part of the submission.
Selection: AIM evaluates applications based on several key criteria, including the school’s dedication to fostering innovation, the strength and clarity of the proposal—particularly how it plans to promote STEM education—the adequacy of available infrastructure, and the anticipated positive impact on the wider community.
Agreement: Once selected, schools are required to enter into an official agreement with AIM for establishing the ATL. Following this, AIM shares a list of mandatory documents and next steps with the selected schools via email.
