RGB LED (Common Anode ) (Pack of 10)

RGB LED (Common Anode) makes some beautiful colors, this 10mm tri-color LED with separate red, green and blue LED chips inside! They make a nice indicator, and are fun to color-swirl. We like RGB LEDs because they color mix inside instead of appearing as 3 distinct LEDs.

These RGB LEDs are Common Anode type which means you connect one pin to 5V and then tie the other three legs to the ground through a resistor. Most of the people use CA( common anode) more than CC(common cathode) because multi-LED driver chips are often designed exclusively for Common Anode and can’t be used with Common-Cathode. These RGB LEDs have four pins: one for each color and a common anode. Use this one LED for three status indicators or pulse width modulation all three and get mixed colours! If you want to use these RGB LEDs with your Arduino project, then you will need few components like resistors , jumper wires and breadboard

1. Is this RGB LED common anode or cathode?

  • This RGB LED is a common anode. If the LED lights up with the red tip on the longest lead and the black on one of the other leads – you have a common anode RGB LED. If the LED lights up with the black tip on the longest lead and the red tip on one of the other leads – you have a common cathode RGB LED.

2. How do you wire a common anode RGB LED?

  • The connections are pretty simple. We connect the power pin (pin 2) of the RGB LED to +3V of power. This gives +3V of power to each of the anodes of the 3 LEDs. We then connect toggle switches to each of the other pins, which are the cathodes of each of the 3 LEDs.

3. What is the difference between common anode LED and common cathode LED?

  • Common Anode displays have all the LED Anodes connected together and need a display driver with outputs that become low to turn each segment on. Common Cathode displays have all the LED cathodes connected together and need a driver with outputs that become high to turn each segment on.

4. How does common anode work?

  • Common anode means that the anode (positive) side of all of the LEDs are electrically connected at one pin, and each LED cathode has its own pin. So turning on any particular segment will involve running a current from this common anode (positive) pin to the particular cathode (negative) pin for the desired segment.

5. How do you tell if RGB LED is common anode or cathode?

  • If you set your multimeter to continuity mode. You have a common anode RGB LED if the LED lights up with the red tip on the longest lead and the black tip on one of the other leads. You have a common cathode RGB LED if the LED lights up with the black tip on the longest lead and the red tip on one of the other leads.

6. How do you control common anode RGB LED?

  • The anode of the internal LEDs in a common anode RGB LED is all connected to the external anode lead. To control each colour, we will connect the anode lead to the positive terminal of the power supply and apply a LOW signal or ground to the red, green, and blue leads.
