Drone Motors/Quadcopter Motors

The drone motor is what powers the propellers and makes the drone fly, Drones usually have like multiple motors, one on each arm of the drone. These motors are usually brushless, which is like a better type of motor. They're more efficient and last longer than the other type, brushed motors.

Drone motors are essential components of drones that influence their flight characteristics. There are two types of drone motors: brushed and brushless motors. Brushless motors are more powerful for their weight than brushed motors, and they last longer. The selection of an electric drone motor has an enormous influence on the flight characteristics of the drone.

Drone motors come in different sizes for drones ranging from micro quadcopters to heavy lift drones. The size of the motor influences the thrust generated by the drone.

There are two types of drone motors: clockwise (CW) and counter-clockwise (CCW) rotation motors. They vary only by the direction by which they rotate with the rest of the design parameters of the motor being the same.

FAQs:

1.What are the types of drone motors?

  • Brushed Motors: Brushed motors are classic and traditional. They have been around for several decades and have been the foundation of standard motor technology. In a brushed motor, a centrally located rotor is surrounded by a stator that is lined with a pair of magnets of opposing polarity. The rotational movement of the rotor is caused due to the contact of brushes of the rotor’s commutator with a current supply.
  • Brushless Motors: The design changes that were made for brushless motors are very important. Instead of a central rotor, brushless motors have a central stator surrounded by a rotor that is lined with a permanent set of magnets.

2.What is the use of a drone motor?

  • Drone Motors are an important component of the drone, since they help in powering up the drones. The propellers of the drone cannot rotate until and unless they are powered by a motor.  The repetitive attraction and repulsion of the magnets helps in converting the electrical current into the mechanical revolution of the shaft that moves the drone.

3.What are drone motors and propellers?

  • Drone Motors: The drone is not going to move until you have integrated the best motor. This is the most important component of the drone. Motors are identified by different notations. For example, the kv rating denotes the motor velocity, as it depicts the number of revolutions per minute when a potential difference of 1 Volt is applied with zero load.
  • Drone Propellers: There are propellers specifically designed for quadcopters, depending on the purpose of use. The efficiency and the speed of the drone depends on the length of the propellers.  If you opt for smaller propellers, you will be able to fly the drone with greater speeds, but the efficiency will be compromised. On the other hand, if you choose the longer props, you will be able to fly the copter steadily, as you will be able to lift more weight during its flight and use less power.

4.How do drone motors work?

  • Drone motors works on the following principle:
    • When an electric current is passed through the windings of the motor, the magnets distributed within the motors are attracted or repelled. The continuous and repetitive repulsion and attraction of the magnets gets transformed into the revolution of the shaft. This allows the motor to spin an attached propeller at extremely high speeds and thus produce the thrust.

5.Which is the best drone motor based on different requirements?

  • The type of drone you chose depends upon the following important factors:
    • Weight of the Drone: It is very important to have a clear idea about the overall weight of the drone itself. You can have an approximate weight idea for your drone by simply calculating the weight of its individual parts or components. But note that the list must include all parts like payload, battery unit, motors, wires, PDB, flight controller and frame of the device.
    • Thrust to Weight Ratio: This is a very essential parameter as it means your motor is going to have additional thrust to keep your drone safe during windy weather or at the time of flight maneuvers.
    • Efficiency: Professionals recommend choosing a motor that has efficiency value near about 7 or above this. There are chances that a motor could be efficient with its lower throttle range; in that case they will lose efficiency with increasing current range at higher limits.
    • Torque: The torque range helps to define the ability of the motor to shift between RPM values. This change ultimately decides the responsiveness of drones in air. If your motor has a high torque value then it will naturally lead to snappy response as RPM will accept faster changes. It will also lead to lesser propeller wash.
