SMD Component Identification Guide

Know the main categories: Resistors, capacitors, inductors, diodes, transistors, and SMD ICs.

Package size codes: Common sizes include 0402, 0603, 0805, 1206, which refer to the dimensions of the component.

Reading resistor codes:

Example: “103” = 10 kΩ (10 × 10³).
Example: “472” = 4.7 kΩ (47 × 10²).

Capacitor markings: Some capacitors use codes like “104” = 0.1 µF. Many, however, have no printed markings.

Diodes & transistors: These often have 2–3 character codes printed on top. Look them up using an SMD code chart.

IC packages: Common forms include SOT-23, SOP-8, QFN, QFP, etc. These require careful pin-orientation and handling.

SMD LED is an acronym for Surface Mount Device, Light Emitting Diode. SMD LED modules are widely used to produce LED lights and LED strips for different applications in different industries. This technology is used where high efficiency and precise control of light distribution is required. SMD LEDs are characterized by long life, low power consumption, and high levels of reliability and safety. SMD LED chips are self-contained LED components that are surface-mounted onto a printed circuit board (PCB) by soldering using SMT technology. This allows SMD LEDs to be soldered to both sides of the PCB without cutting or drilling the PCB.

Tips for Soldering SMD Components

Use a fine-tipped soldering iron, flux, tweezers, and thin solder wire.

For small components (0603/0805):

Apply a small amount of solder to one pad.
Hold the component with tweezers.
Reheat the tinned pad to anchor one side.
Solder the opposite pad.

For ICs:

Apply flux generously.
Align and tack one corner first.
Solder the remaining pins with drag-soldering.
Remove any solder bridges using solder wick.

Avoid prolonged heating - SMD pads can lift if overheated.

Clean the board with isopropyl alcohol after soldering.
